UNIVERSAL MAYHEM
Twin towers, so high
Mirrored each other, seared in our minds
Never to stand again,
Trapping our rage within.
Those walls that we saw
Fractured and wounded, open and raw,
Grieving in every heart,
Tearing our souls apart.
We will rise
Through our haze of tears.
We will look ahead,
Overcome our fears.
So many lives lost,
Counting the victims, weighing the cost.
Who can survive the pain?
Nothing can be the same.
We will rise
Through our haze of tears.
We will look ahead,
Overcome our fears.
We will stand.
We will find the way
Down a different road
To a better day.
We will stand.
I began writing this poem about 4 hours
after I began hearing the news of the disastrous events of this day. The words just poured out of my soul and I wrote
them down as they came to me. I was standing outside my office building having a smoke, actually. By the evening my poem was
complete. It is actually a song, but I can't write music. It is very beautiful, and I shared the poem with my close friends
only. No one has ever heard the music........
Today is the 60th Anniversary of D Day. I offer another original creation of mine......

BEFORE THE GUNS
As I lie awake before the guns,
Staring into the dark and star-filled night,
Memories well up and fade as swiftly
As a river runs.
Will I see home again?
What I write in the still of this night
Is not like Flanders Fields.
Soon there might be no one left
To read the words I write.
So, I am here in this barren place
Stretched out like a sacrifice to lesser gods
Before the guns......
Fire!
I wrote this poem on the eve of the first Gulf War. |
